Donate rides, clothes and hope for tomorrow
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WVLT) – Before Jamie Fleisch starts driving her car, she blows on a breathalyzer and is grateful to be able to benefit from this form of transportation. “If I hadn’t had people to guide me, lead me and help me. That’s why I want to give back so much. Fleisch regularly accompanies other women who need help getting to counseling and job interviews. She knows what it’s like to hit rock bottom without even being able to drive. She plans to never return to this point in life, crediting Anderson County Drug Court, Oxford House, the generosity of people to help him and his faith in God.
Fleisch said drug court was an option to enroll in a program to change her life after nearly losing her to alcoholism and drug addiction. “And they helped me get into Oxford House Recovery.” At the group home for recovery, “They taught me to relive my life, not to break the law, and to be involved. They let your kids stay there. Now Fleisch is celebrating family life with her toddler, Nora, and her little boy on the way, along with their father. In addition to driving other people, Fleisch enjoys collecting donated baby clothes and items that others might need when they are going through the same difficult times she has had.
Prudence Spencer in Outreach for Oxford House of Knoxville, said Fleisch, “left Oxford and she is still giving back to Oxford. She just has the biggest heart ever! Spencer, who said she also had to overcome addiction at some point in her life, said the need for more group recovery homes was great. “To make a difference in our community, we are offering this life of support,” said Spencer.
Anderson County District attorney Dave Clark said statewide statistics show that for 2019, 46% of people who attend drug courts are able to complete the program. This includes recovery from addiction and resources to regain life skills and eventually reunite families.
Fleisch said her children and her faith motivated her on a daily basis. “She’s all that would make me want to go on and take the next steps in my life… God willing. I just know about today.
